Match Notes
High-level: a hot and humid but beautiful day for tennis by the Hudson. Wilmer was trying out a few Head demo rackets and found his groove with the MP but really brought out my best tennis. We had a ton of great rallies and lots of fun, running out of time in the end. Can't wait to get back out there! Detail: We had a lengthy warmup as Wilmer tried out 3 new rackets; although regardless of the racket he was crushing the ball and allowing me to feed off that power. Wilmer began serving with the wind at his back and I did my best off the bat and throughout to stay loose and keep swinging the way I had in warmups (as he certainly was). It paid off with a quick break and then a tricky hold. We then traded holds despite various chances for both to apply pressure amid great rallies featuring powerful baseline play and the only misses coming from net-scrapers, line-misses, and the occasional poorly timed shank or duff. At least twice in the middle of the set, I had multiple break opportunities that Wilmer fought valiantly and wisely to overcome, including a tough hold to get us to 4-3. At that point, he finally broke my serve only for me to fight right back to go up 5-4. We then traded more holds with some solid serves, some good placement, but otherwise more great extended baseline rallies. With time running out at 5-7, Wilmer went up 30-0 but I managed to get us to 30-30 and some battles ensued bringing us to deuce. I got a good look at a second serve and hit a solid forehand down the line, which Wilmer returned right back with his smooth one-handed backhand... only for me to stay low and hit a clean winner right back down (and on) the line. I let out a victorious yell as I was looking at break point (and match point for an 8-game pro set). Some onlookers were amused / startled. I got another look at second serve but it was a good kicker out wide and I tried running around it for the inside-out winner, but missed by a foot in the far alley. Another deuce resulted in 2 more classic baseline rallies and some tricky shots / misses, leading to a final deuce. We realized neither of us would concede this game any time soon and the next players were off the bench. We laughed and amicably dapped hands as we walked off, dissecting the match and planning our next fruitful endeavor on the court. Wilmer - again, great playing today and thanks for bringing out my best ground strokes and for the all-around fun and competitive play! I'll try not to miss so many volleys next time if you can allow it :)
